Straight Dope on Medicine: NEXXT Spine

Noblesville, Indiana dates way back to 1823. It is a town of about 70,000 nestled in Hamilton County.

It is known for its well-preserved historic downtown, vibrant arts and culture scene, and numerous attractions that make it a popular destination for visitors from around the world. The city is also home to the Ruoff Music Center, which is the primary outdoor music venue in the Indianapolis metro area.

Excited yet?

If none of that suits you, you can engage in cutting edge spinal research.

Downtown Noblesville

Noblesville, IN October 19th, 2022 – Nexxt Spine, LLC was recently named as one of the Indiana Best Places to Work in Manufacturing! This program was created by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

Nexxt Spine does cutting edge spinal research. They are in the business of constructing and printing titanium spinal parts.

Why not?

Their products are porous structures that allow the body to colonize them with bone, and more readily accept them.

There are a host of products available on the marketplace.[i]

Their most recent development is proving itself in clinical trials.

Noblesville, IN July 12, 2022 – Nexxt Spine, LLC a leader in design and development of 3D printed, porous, titanium implants for the treatment of spinal disorders announced the completion of enrollment and 6 month clinical data collection comparting the NEXXT MATRIXX® 3-D Printed titanium interbody family to Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone (PEEK) devices.

Nexxt Spine President Andy Elsbury, “Nexxt Spine is grateful to physician researchers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for their time and effort in completing the 6 month review of the study results, and looks forward to the final 1 year data review.”

“Results from the 6 month data that was shared with Nexxt Spine demonstrated a significant increase in the fusion rates for both one and two level procedures, as compared to PEEK, (82% versus 25% for the PEEK device). In addition, the analysis of subsidence of the interbody devices had only 11.8% of the levels for the NEXXT MATRIXX® device showing subsidence greater than 2mm, while the PEEK device exhinbited 55% of levels, showing that the NEXXT MATRIXX technology has intrinsic benefits to patients and their outcomes” noted Jim Freid, Director of Development and Clinical Studies.

Nexxt 5 Core Pillars for a successful fusion:

  1. Varying pore sizes of 300µm, 500µm, and 700µm to support vascularization and osteogenesis.

  2. A 75% open porous structure to increase surface area for nutrient exchange and potential volume for boney in-growth.

  3. A 7µm micro-roughened surface to increase osteoblast differentiation, production of angiogenic factors, and surface osteointegration.

  4. An integral modulus of elasticity engineered to be comparable to PEEK devices leading to a more physiological product.

  5. 700 µm A/P and lateral lattice geometry to provide robust, unimpeded radiographic imaging by reducing overall titanium material and device density.

Nexxt Spine is very happy with their business performance as well.

The historic year was a result of a focus on product innovation, infrastructure growth, and commercial execution.

2023 Highlights
• Patients - solutions impacted a record number of patients in 2023!
• Clinical Evidence – Level 1 clinical study evidence published establishing that NEXXT MATRIXX® 3D Printed interbody cages assist in early fusion at significantly higher rates with lower rates of subsidence when compared to PEEK cages. The clinical study supports proprietary features, including surface topography and pore design, of NEXXT MATRIXX 3D Printed interbody cages may play a primary role in facilitating osteointegration and fusion.
• Products – 10 products launched in 2023 featuring the Inertia® Connexx™ Modular Pedicle Screw System and Anterior Cervical Solutions including the NEXXT MATRIXX Cervical Convexx™ system.
• People – 21 team members joined in 2023 including key additions to the senior leadership team, sales leadership team, operations team, and human resources team.

Transformational year highlighted by record surgical volume, record growth, and publication of Level 1 clinical evidence

2023 was an outstanding year for Nexxt Spine, but we are just getting started. Our growth, including adding talent throughout the organization, sets the foundation for 2024 and beyond.”
